Tired Eyes

Eyes that look tired regardless of how much sleep you’ve had.

Tired-looking eyes and dark circles are among the most common concerns patients bring to consultation — and among the most impactful to address. The eye area is often the first place to show the signs of ageing and fatigue, and changes here can make the whole face look more tired, older or less well than it actually is.

Dark circles have several distinct causes and understanding which is driving the concern is essential to choosing the right treatment. Vascular dark circles — caused by the visibility of blood vessels beneath the thin skin of the lower eyelid — produce a bluish or purplish discolouration that is often worse in the morning and improves through the day. Pigmented dark circles — caused by excess melanin in the periorbital skin — produce a brownish discolouration that tends to be more consistent and is more common in darker skin types. Structural dark circles — caused by hollowing in the tear trough area — produce a shadow effect as light falls across the indentation between the lower eyelid and the cheek. This is the most common cause of dark circles in patients seeking aesthetic treatment, and it is driven by volume loss rather than pigmentation or vascularity.

A tired appearance around the eyes is also influenced by skin quality — crepiness, fine lines and loss of firmness in the periorbital skin all contribute to an overall look of fatigue that goes beyond dark circles alone.

Treatments to consider.

The right treatment depends entirely on what is causing the dark circles and tired appearance. Tear trough filler is the most effective treatment for structural dark circles caused by hollowing — restoring volume to the tear trough and reducing the shadow that creates the appearance of darkness. It is one of the most transformative treatments we offer for the right patient, producing a rested and refreshed appearance that can be difficult to achieve any other way.

Skin boosters improve the quality and hydration of the delicate periorbital skin, reducing crepiness and fine lines and improving the overall appearance of the under-eye area. Polynucleotides are particularly effective in this area — supporting tissue repair and improving skin quality at a cellular level without adding volume. Tixel® is uniquely suited to the periorbital skin — safe to use very close to the eye, it improves skin quality, texture and fine lines in an area where most other resurfacing technologies cannot safely treat. Anti-wrinkle injections can provide a subtle brow lift, opening the eye area and reducing the appearance of hooding that contributes to a tired look. Professional skincare — particularly peptides, growth factors and vitamin C — supports skin quality around the eye and complements clinical treatment.
