Facial Volume

When the face loses its structure and support.

Facial volume loss is one of the most significant — and least discussed — drivers of facial ageing. Most patients notice the symptoms without identifying the cause: a face that looks flatter, more hollow, or more tired than it used to. Cheeks that have lost their fullness. Temples that appear sunken. A jawline that has softened. Eyes that look more hollow. These changes are not primarily about lines or skin quality — they are about the loss of the underlying structure that once gave the face its shape.

Volume loss is a natural part of ageing. The fat compartments that give the face its youthful contour gradually diminish and descend from the mid-twenties onwards. Bone remodels over time, reducing the skeletal support beneath the soft tissue. Collagen and elastin decline, reducing the skin’s ability to hold itself against the underlying structure. The combined effect is a face that shifts gradually from the supported, lifted contours of youth towards a flatter, less defined appearance.

The process is not uniform — genetics, lifestyle, sun exposure and body weight all influence how quickly and where volume is lost. Significant weight loss can accelerate facial volume loss considerably, as can smoking and chronic sun exposure.

Treatments to consider.

Restoring lost volume requires treatments that either replace it directly or stimulate the body to rebuild the structural tissues it has lost. The right approach depends on where volume has been lost, how much, and what the patient wants to achieve.

Dermal fillers replace volume immediately and precisely — restoring fullness to the cheeks, temples, under-eye area and lower face with results that are visible straight away. The 8-Point Facelift uses precisely placed filler across the mid and lower face to restore structure, lift and contour in a single treatment. Collagen stimulating treatments — Sculptra®, Radiesse® Dilute and Gouri® — take a longer-term approach, encouraging the body to rebuild its own collagen and restore structural quality gradually over months. Skin boosters improve the quality and hydration of thinning skin, complementing volume restoration with improved surface quality.
