Frown Lines

The lines between the brows — and why they matter.

Frown lines — also called glabellar lines or the eleven lines — are the vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows when we concentrate, squint or express concern or displeasure. They are caused by the repeated contraction of the corrugator and procerus muscles, which draw the brows together and downward. Over time, as these contractions are repeated thousands of times a day, the lines become permanently etched into the skin and remain visible even when the face is completely relaxed.

For many patients frown lines are the concern that prompts their first aesthetic consultation. The reason is straightforward — frown lines at rest can make a person look angry, stressed or unapproachable regardless of their actual mood or expression. They are one of the most impactful concerns to address because softening them changes the overall impression the face gives without altering its fundamental character.

Frown lines vary significantly between patients — in some they are fine and superficial, in others they are deep, well-established creases that have developed over many years. The depth and severity of the lines influences the treatment approach and the level of improvement that can be achieved.

Treatments to consider.

Anti-wrinkle injections are the primary and most effective treatment for frown lines. Precise doses of botulinum toxin relax the corrugator and procerus muscles, preventing the contractions that create and deepen the lines. For patients new to treatment, the improvement is often striking — lines that have been present for years soften significantly within two weeks of treatment. Results typically last three to four months and improve with consistent treatment over time.

For deeper, more established frown lines that remain visible at rest even after anti-wrinkle treatment, a small amount of dermal filler can smooth the residual crease. Skin boosters improve skin quality and hydration in the glabellar area, supporting the results of anti-wrinkle treatment and improving the overall texture of the skin between the brows. Professional skincare — particularly retinol and peptides — supports skin thickness and resilience and helps slow the deepening of established lines.
