Jawline
When the jawline loses its definition.
A well-defined jawline is one of the most significant markers of a youthful face. As we age, the jawline softens and loses its sharpness through a combination of processes that work simultaneously — and understanding what is driving the change is essential to treating it effectively.
Volume loss in the mid-face causes the soft tissue above to descend, collecting along the jawline and creating the appearance of jowls. Bone remodelling reduces the skeletal support that once held the soft tissue in place. Skin laxity develops as collagen and elastin decline, allowing the skin to sag rather than remaining taut against the underlying structure. Fat compartments along the jaw diminish, reducing the definition of the jawline itself.
The result is a jaw that appears less defined, heavier or older — and a face that has lost the clean transition from cheek to jaw that characterises a younger face. Jowls — the soft tissue that accumulates just below the jawline — develop as this process advances, creating a scalloped or irregular outline that many patients find particularly frustrating.
Treatments to consider.
The right approach depends on what is driving the concern — volume loss, skin laxity, or a combination of both. For many patients it is a combination, and the most effective treatment plan addresses both elements.
Dermal fillers restore definition and structure to the jawline directly, placing product along the jaw to sharpen its outline and improve the transition between the lower face and neck. The 8-Point Facelift addresses jawline definition as part of a comprehensive approach to mid and lower face rejuvenation. Ultherapy® is the most effective non-surgical treatment for skin laxity — working at the structural layer beneath the skin to produce a genuine lift that tightens the jaw and reduces jowling. Collagen stimulating treatments rebuild structural collagen over time, improving skin quality and firmness progressively. Anti-wrinkle injections using the Nefertiti technique relax the platysmal bands of the neck, producing a subtle lift along the jawline.
Treatments that may help: Dermal Fillers, 8-Point Facelift, Ultherapy®, Collagen Stimulating Treatments, Anti-Wrinkle Injections, Sculptra®, Professional Skincare.
