Hyperhidrosis Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating — a common condition that can be effectively treated.
Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating that goes beyond what the body needs for temperature regulation. It affects approximately 3% of the population and can have a significant impact on daily life — influencing clothing choices, social confidence, professional situations and personal relationships. Many patients have been managing it for years without realising it can be effectively and simply addressed.
The most commonly affected areas are the underarms, hands, feet and face — though hyperhidrosis can occur in other areas too. Primary hyperhidrosis — the most common form — is not caused by an underlying medical condition. It is driven by overactivity of the sweat glands, often with a genetic component, and tends to be triggered or worsened by heat, stress and anxiety. Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying condition or medication and should be discussed with a GP before seeking aesthetic treatment.
Excessive underarm sweating is the form we treat most frequently at Mulberry House. It is one of the most straightforward and rewarding treatments we offer — highly effective, comfortable, and producing results that last significantly longer than most patients expect.
Treatments to consider.
Botulinum toxin injected into the underarm area is the most effective non-surgical treatment for hyperhidrosis. The injections temporarily block the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands, dramatically reducing sweating in the treated area. Treatment takes around 30 minutes, is well tolerated by the vast majority of patients, and produces results that typically last six to twelve months — significantly longer than the three to four months seen with cosmetic anti-wrinkle treatment, as the sweat glands require a higher dose to suppress.
The improvement is life-changing for many patients — the freedom to wear what they want, to raise their arms without anxiety, and to move through professional and social situations without the concern that has followed them for years. It is a treatment we recommend without hesitation for patients who have been managing this condition on their own.
