Hollow Cheeks

When the cheeks lose their fullness and definition.

Hollow cheeks are one of the most common and most impactful signs of facial ageing — yet they are often the last thing patients identify as the cause of the changes they are noticing. A face that looks more tired, more angular or older than it feels is frequently driven by a loss of volume in the mid-face rather than by lines or skin quality alone.

The cheeks are supported by several distinct fat compartments that sit at different levels of the face. From the mid-twenties onwards these fat pads gradually diminish and descend, flattening the cheek and reducing the lift and projection that give a young face its characteristic shape. The result is a face that looks deflated rather than simply older — cheekbones that appear less defined, a transition between the lower eyelid and cheek that becomes more hollow and shadowed, and nasolabial folds that deepen as the support above them reduces.

Hollow cheeks can also develop from significant weight loss, illness, or as a natural characteristic of certain face shapes — not all hollow cheeks are age-related. The cause influences the treatment approach and the amount of product needed to achieve a natural result.

Treatments to consider.

Dermal fillers are the most immediate and effective treatment for hollow cheeks — restoring volume precisely to the areas where it has been lost and producing results that are visible straight away. The choice of product matters significantly in this area. Firmer fillers with good lift capacity are used for structural cheek restoration; softer products are used for more superficial volume. At Mulberry House our clinical team selects the most appropriate product for each patient rather than defaulting to a single option.

The 8-Point Facelift addresses cheek hollowing as part of a comprehensive approach to mid and lower face rejuvenation — restoring volume across multiple points to produce a lifted, balanced result. Sculptra® and other collagen stimulating treatments take a longer-term approach, encouraging the body to rebuild its own structural collagen gradually over months. Skin boosters complement volume restoration by improving the quality and hydration of the overlying skin.

Treatments that may help: Dermal Fillers, 8-Point Facelift, Sculptra®, Collagen Stimulating Treatments, Skin Boosters, Professional Skincare.
