Facial Lines
Lines and wrinkles — understanding what drives them.
Facial lines and wrinkles are the most common reason patients seek aesthetic treatment — and one of the most nuanced to address well. Not all lines are the same, and the right treatment depends entirely on understanding what is causing them.
Dynamic lines are caused by repeated facial muscle movement — smiling, frowning, squinting. They appear first as expression lines and gradually become etched into the skin as collagen and elastin decline with age. Static lines are visible at rest regardless of expression — they develop from a combination of volume loss, skin thinning and the cumulative effect of years of movement.
Volume loss plays a significant role that is often underestimated. As the fat pads of the face descend and diminish with age, the skin loses the support structure beneath it. Lines around the nose and mouth, for example, are often driven as much by volume loss in the cheeks as by the skin directly around them. Treating the line alone without addressing the underlying volume deficit produces a limited and often unnatural result.
Skin quality is the third factor — thinner, less hydrated, less elastic skin creases more readily and shows lines more prominently. Improving skin quality from within can make a meaningful difference to how lines appear, even without directly targeting the muscle or the volume beneath.
Treatments to consider.
Anti-wrinkle injections are the most effective treatment for dynamic lines — relaxing the specific muscles responsible for movement-driven wrinkles. Dermal fillers address volume loss and smooth deeper static lines by restoring structural support beneath the skin. Skin boosters improve skin quality, hydration and elasticity — making skin less prone to creasing and improving the appearance of fine surface lines. Collagen stimulating treatments rebuild the skin’s own structural collagen over time, producing gradual and natural improvement in skin thickness and resilience.
For skin texture and surface quality, microneedling, Tixel® and ResurFX™ stimulate collagen remodelling and progressively improve the appearance of established lines. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion improve skin clarity and surface texture. Professional skincare — particularly retinol, peptides and antioxidants — is the essential daily foundation that supports and prolongs all clinical treatment.
